1976 BMW 6-Series (E24)

The BMW 6-Series E24, produced from 1976 to 1989, is a standout in the brand’s illustrious history, epitomizing luxury, performance, and timeless design. As BMW’s first entry into the luxury grand tourer market, the E24 combined sleek aesthetics with powerful engineering, earning its place as a beloved classic among car enthusiasts and collectors.

The E24’s design was a collaborative effort between BMW’s in-house team and renowned automotive designer Paul Bracq. The result was a striking silhouette characterized by its long hood, aggressive shark-nose front end, and sweeping lines. The car’s low stance and wide track not only gave it a sporty appearance but also improved its aerodynamic efficiency and handling. Inside, the E24 offered a blend of luxury and functionality. The driver-oriented cockpit featured high-quality materials, comfortable leather seats, and advanced (for the time) amenities like air conditioning, power windows, and a premium sound system. The emphasis on driver comfort and ergonomics made the E24 a pleasure to drive on long journeys, embodying the true spirit of a grand tourer.

The E24 was built on the same platform as the BMW 5-Series E12 and later the E28, which ensured a solid foundation for its grand touring capabilities. It featured a range of inline-six engines that delivered smooth power and excellent performance. The initial lineup included the 630CS and 633CSi, equipped with 3.0-liter and 3.2-liter engines, respectively. These engines provided a balance of power and efficiency, with the 633CSi producing around 197 horsepower. In 1978, the 635CSi was introduced, featuring a 3.5-liter engine that boosted output to 215 horsepower, allowing the car to reach a top speed of over 140 mph. In 1983, BMW introduced the most powerful variant, the M635CSi (known as the M6 in North America). This model was powered by the M88/3 engine, a 3.5-liter inline-six derived from the BMW M1 supercar. With 286 horsepower, the M635CSi could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds, making it one of the fastest luxury coupes of its time. The M635CSi also featured upgraded suspension, brakes, and aerodynamic enhancements, distinguishing it as the ultimate performance version of the E24.

The E24 was ahead of its time in terms of technology and safety features. It was one of the first cars to offer anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option, and later as standard. The car also featured advanced onboard diagnostics and electronic fuel injection systems, which improved performance, efficiency, and reliability. The BMW 6-Series E24 left an indelible mark on the automotive world. It established BMW as a formidable player in the luxury grand tourer segment and set the stage for future generations of the 6-Series. The E24’s blend of style, performance, and luxury resonated with buyers and set a high standard for competitors.
